Local litter pickers in Perthshire hailed and recognised for going above and beyond in their communities

Local litter pickers in Perthshire have been hailed and recognised by receiving gold credentials.

Perth and Kinross Council’s waste services team recently invited householders to nominate a member of their community who goes above and beyond with their volunteer litter picking.

Numerous nominations were received, with some volunteers receiving multiple plaudits from members of the public who see them busy litter picking, by family members and by work colleagues who are inspired by their dedication - whatever the weather - to clear and bag the litter and report any fly-tipping in their community.

On Thursday, councillor Andrew Parrott, convener of the environment, infrastructure and economic development committee, met with six volunteers at the North Inch to award them gold litter pickers.

They were Louise MacLeod, Martin Shaw, Jake and Aila Ramsay, Nikki Murphy and Mel Chad.

Councillor Parrott explained: “During lockdown, our waste services team worked with communities across Perth and Kinross to set up a network of Litter Picker Hosts, so that anyone wishing to litter pick can borrow (and return) equipment locally.

“We’re delighted that this network has led to an increase in volunteers undertaking litter picking. Moreover, we are extremely appreciative of the volunteers who have gone above and beyond in their community.

“Some go litter picking every day in their local area, some being very young and inspiring to their peers and families, some covering huge distances to make the area look as good as it can be – which benefits the whole community. We thank them all.”

To celebrate these volunteers and to acknowledge the valuable contribution that they give to our community, each has received a gold litter picker and a waste awareness goodie bag.
