Local hero praised for quick thinking action after swimmer pulled out to sea in Cork

A fast-acting individual used a ringbuoy to save a swimmer by pulling them from the water on a Cork beach.

Last Saturday the person was swimming off Coolmain Beach when a current began to drag them out to sea.

They were unable to swim back in on their own, but thankfully a local managed unhook and throw out a buoy to them so they could hold on in the water until more help arrived, Cork Beo reports.

Kinsale's Old Head/Seven Heads Coast Guard were tasked with the incident and arrived on scene.

The Coast Guard stressed that it was one of a number of similar incidents at Coolmain, and demonstrated how the currents have ripped unsuspecting people out to sea before.

They said: "Our unit was tasked to an incident at Coolmain beach on Saturday afternoon, an individual went swimming from the beach and needed assistance to get back ashore.

"There were extremely strong currents coming from the Killbrittain side of the beach, these currents head for open water once they hit Coolmain beach."

The noted the "quick thinking actions" of a member of the public getting a ringbuoy to the person, saying it was very important at this incident.

"This is only one of a number of incidents of this type at Coolmain in recent times.

"Please take extra care when swimming at Coolmain as changing sand patterns make it unpredictable," they concluded.
