Local government leader of the future winner announced

Rachel Burnham
Rachel Burnham, 24, has been chosen as the Guardian Local Leaders Network's top young leader 2013.

After two weeks of voting we are pleased to announce that Rachel Burnham has been selected as our top young leader in local government for 2013.

Burnham, executive in public service advisory for local government at BDO LLP, 24, fought off stiff competition from our nine nominees so a big congratulations to everyone who was in our shortlist.

"This is a fantastic honour, even to have been shortlisted to be part of such a talented group is a great achievement," said Burnham.

"It is really encouraging to see that people with a passion for local government can succeed whether based in authorities themselves, in central organisations or in the private sector."

The main focus of Burnham's job is to provide advice and support to councils and their partners. In her first two years she has positioned herself as a key figure in the debate over the future of public services.

Her colleague and nominator, Olivia Crill director of public sector at BDO, said: "She is a trusted adviser on a pro bono basis to the customers services London group on social media and apps, and will be speaking at a conference in September as the keynote speaker on social media."

Join us on the 21 August from 12pm-2pm to discuss what leaders are needed to help local authorities take on future challenges.
