The 2016 New Year honours list sees 31 medals awarded to former and serving politicians and officers in local government.
There were no damehoods or knighthoods for serving local government bosses in the honours list, published on 31 December 2015, but Heather Rabbatts, now a non-executive director of the Football Association, who was chief executive of the London borough of Lambeth from 1995 to 2000, is made a dame, as is Glenys Stacey. Now chief executive of Ofqual, Stacey was formerly chief executive of the Standards Board for England, responsible for upholding ethical standards in local government.
Alan Yarrow, lord mayor of London from 2014-15, receives a knighthood.
Simon Henig, the Labour leader of Durham county council, receives a CBE. Tudor Evans, the Labour leader of Plymouth city council, receives an OBE, as does Peter Fleming, the Conservative leader of Sevenoaks district council, and Peter John, the Labour leader of the London borough of Southwark.
Keith Wakefield, the former Labour leader of Leeds city council, who stood down in May 2015, receives an OBE, as does John Weighell, the former Conservative leader of North Yorkshire county council, who also resigned in May.
Andrew Smith, the longstanding former chief executive of Hampshire county council, who retired this year, is made a CBE. Jo Farrar, chief executive of Bath and North East Somerset council, receives an OBE, as does Malcolm Morley, chief executive of Harlow council. Steven Pleasant, chief executive of Tameside Metropolitan borough council, receives an MBE in recognition of his work for the welfare and housing of asylum seekers and refugees.
