Local football set to pay tribute to Richard Scott this weekend

Local football is set to pay tribute to the Irish FA referee who died in a NIE substation incident in Portadown.

Richard Scott - one of the IFA's most respected match officials - was fatally injured while working as an electrician for NIE Networks on the town's Mahon Road on Wednesday morning.

Local football has been paying tribute to the Castledawson 33-year-old, who is set to be remembered at every football game on Saturday.

Neil McNickle, national secretary of the Northern Ireland Referee Association, said: "We are intending to remember our colleague Richard Scott at every game across Northern Ireland this Saturday.

"We are asking all who are attending or participating in matches on Saturday to observe one minute of clapping in memory of Richard.

"We feel that Richard would have found that much more acceptable, and in line with his larger than life character, than one minute of silence."

Tributes have been paid to Richard following the 33-year-old's death.

The IFA's Head of Refereeing Trevor Moutray said Richard would be remembered as "one of the characters" of the local game.

Clubs including Glentoran, Portadown and Draperstown Celtic also paid glowing tributes to the hugely popular match official.

The funeral service for Mr Scott will be held at his home on Sunday at 2.30pm, followed by burial in Polepatrick Cemetery in Magherafelt.
