Local elections 2022: Find the candidates standing in your area next month

Councils up and down the country are preparing for the local elections.

Most of the seats up for election on Thursday May 5 were last contested in 2018, when the UK was still in the European Union, the Prime Minister was Theresa May, Labour was led by Jeremy Corbyn and the Liberal Democrat leader was Vince Cable.

The political landscape of the UK has undergone huge changes in the past four years. Yet many of the issues that can decide local elections remain the same, such as when bins are collected, the state of neighbourhood parks and pavements, and access to libraries and hospitals.

This year, voters in each Greater Manchester borough will be choosing at least one councillor in each ward – but there are 'all out' elections in Bury and Rochdale with all seats up for grabs. Labour currently runs nine councils in the city-region - although no party has a majority in Stockport - while the Conservatives are in power at Bolton council.

Local councillors serve for a four-year term. Some councils elect all of their councillors at the same time every four years, while other councils elect just a portion of their councillors each time and hold elections more regularly.
