Local elections 2021: What to do if you forgot to send your postal vote

The local elections take place in England, Scotland and Wales tomorrow.

Depending on where they live, Brits will vote for local councillors, police and crime commissioners and mayors.

There are three ways to vote in an election in the UK. You can either cast your vote in person, by post, or by proxy.

If you have registered for a postal vote, it needs to be sent in plenty of time so it arrives by 10pm on Thursday 6 May. If it arrives any later than this, it will not be counted.

If you have forgotten to send your postal vote ahead of tomorrow, you can still drop it off at your local polling station.

To complete a postal vote, you need to read the instructions carefully in your pack, then complete your vote statement and ballot paper.

Make sure you complete these in private away from others in your household and do not write anything else on the ballot paper, otherwise your vote may not be counted.

Check all forms are complete and seal them in the envelopes provided following the instructions given.

If you have left it too late to arrive by post, you need to drop it off at your local polling station in person (or ask somebody trusted to drop it off for you).

Alternatively you can contact the elections team at your local council to ask if they would be able to come and collect it from you.

It is against the Electoral Commission’s code to ask a candidate or party worker to post it for you.

If you were planning to vote in person, but need to self-isolate due to coronavirus, you have until 5pm on polling day to apply for an emergency proxy vote.

This will allow you to nominate a close relative to cast your vote at the polling station on your behalf.

Tomorrow's local elections include a number of contests that were postponed due to the pandemic and lockdown last year.
