Southport has a ward with three elected Labour councillors for the first time in the town's history.
But the party failed to tighten its overall grip at this year's Sefton local elections.
In Norwood, Labour's Greg Myers and Carran Waterfield were victorious, winning seats that were previously won by Lib Dems, who later moved across to the Labour party.
The Lib Dems lost their Kew seat to Labour, but took the Cambridge ward seat from the Conservatives.
A further blow to the Tories came when the party lost its Harington seat to Formby Residents' Action Group (FRAG)'s Dave Irvinng.
Conservative candidate Simon Jamieson - who had previously held the seat - came some 300 votes behind, with Labour making strides to take second place.
FRAG took its second seat of the night from Labour councillor Catie Page in Ravenmeols ward - beating her by just 17 votes.

The Lib Dems remain the opposition in Sefton, while the Conservatives' only win on the night saw Sefton Conservatives Leader Terry Jones keep his Ainsdale seat.
While the Greens or UKIP are still yet to have any elected councillors in Sefton, both parties saw significant increases on their votes from last year in some wards.
Labour won 16 seats, with the Lib Dems winning four, FRAG winning two and the Conservatives winning one.
The current make-up of Sefton Council’s 66 councillors is 43 Labour, 12 Lib Dem , six Conservative and seven independents.
