Local election results 2021 live: Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner count as it happens

Today Merseyside will elect a new police and crime commissioner.

The position - which oversees the work of the Merseyside Police force - was created in 2012.

It has only ever been held by former Labour MP Jane Kennedy, who was re-elected to the role in 2016.

Ms Kennedy left the Labour Party in 2019 before announcing that she would not seek another term as Police and Crime Commissioner for Merseyside.

When she left Labour, Ms Kennedy's deputy, Emily Spurrell resigned from her position in protest at the move.

And it is Ms Spurrell who is seeking to be elected to replace her former boss today as Labour's candidate.

She will face competition from Liberal Democrat Kirs Brown - who says he wants to win the election soi that he can then abolish the position altogether.

The other candidates in today's election incluide Conservative Bob Teesdale and Malcolm Webster of the Reform UK party.

We will be bringing you all the action and reaction from the Wavertree Tennis Centre in Liverpool today where this count is being held.

The results for this election will appear in our special election tool as they come in.
