Local election 2021 candidates in full: Who is standing in your area?

Local elections are taking place across the country today, Thursday 6 May.

More than 48 million people are eligible to vote, and there are more than 5,000 positions up for grabs.

Depending on whereabouts you live, you may be asked to elect local councillors, a police and crime commissioner, and/or your area's mayor.

People in Scotland and Wales will elect MPs to their parliaments - Holyrood in Scotland and the Senedd in Wales.

It's the largest set of local elections since local government was reorganised in 1973, and most people will be able to participate in at least one vote.

The Hartlepool by-election will take place on the same day as the local elections, to replace resigned Labour MP Mike Hill.

What are the different elections?

There are various different types of local election taking place on 6 May. Depending on where you live, you may be asked to vote for:

  • English local councils
  • Police and Crime Commissioners
  • London Assembly
  • Scottish Parliament
  • Welsh Senedd
  • Directly-elected mayors

You can only vote in the local elections 2021 if you have already registered to vote.

The deadline to register to vote in these elections were 19 April. You can vote in person at a polling station, by post (if you have forgotten to send your ballot on time you can take to a polling station), or by proxy (nominating somebody to vote on your behalf).

If you have chosen to vote in person, social distancing will be in place, and you will be encouraged to bring your own pen or pencil.

Remember to wear a mask, unless exempt, and to join the queue before polling stations close at 10pm.

It's expected that counting the votes will take longer than normal, due to coronavirus regulations, so we may not know the results of the local elections straight away.
