Local Dublin restaurant and shops deliver food and sweets to staff at Tallaght Hospital amid coronavirus crisis on St. Patrick's Day

A local restaurant and string of shops in south Dublin showed their gratitude to hospital staff working on the frontline by delivering free food and sweets to their door during the coronavirus outbreak.

Roma Takeaway wanted to send a "big thank you" to the amazing doctors, nurses and workers at Tallaght Hospital during what is a very testing time for the country.

They said the work those in the hospital were doing was fantastic and that their community would never forget their tremendous effort during one of the most frightening periods in Ireland's history.

On Facebook, they told the staff: "Enjoy your takeaway pizzas on us. Sweets are coming from next door, Valley News, and Jordan’s SuperValu have more goodies for you also.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has warned that we are only at the “calm before the storm” stage in the Coronavirus emergency, with the “surge” still to come.

And he revealed that an escalation of the lockdown will see old and vulnerable people “cocooned” in their homes for weeks on end as the emergency inevitably worsens.

He was speaking live at 9 o’clock in a ministerial address simultaneously shown across multiple broadcast channels last night as the country faced St Patrick’s Day in an emergency lockdown.

In his solemn speech the Taoiseach warned that the surge is yet to come, with the leader’s latest prediction that the crisis will continue well into the summer.

And he added that more than the 15,000 infections he already predicted will emerge as the summer unfolds.

He advised the nation to brace itself for the fact that the emergency will continue long past the initial restrictions being imposed up to March 29th.
