Jack Russell discusses his England and Gloucestershire career and his fascinating life after cricket

The latest edition of Subs Bench has landed - and we have something special for you this week.

The popular Made In Bristol has found a regular home on Bristol Live with Richard Latham and Nigel Turner interviewing a host of former Bristol Rovers and Bristol City players from across the generations.

This week, with the Cricket World Cup in full blow, the pair have caught up with a local cricket great with former England international and Gloucestershire country cricketer Jack Russell.

Russell, now 55, is a man of many talents as a former wicketkeeper turned cricket coach, a well known artist and a football goalkeeping coach.

Russell finished with 54 England test caps and a further 40 one day internationals and had it not been for the presence of Alec Stewart would have amassed many more.

In 1990 was certainly a breakthrough year as the Stroud-born player was one of Wisden's five Cricketers of the Year, with Wisden stating: 'At the beginning of 1989, Jack Russell had played only one Test for England, and was not considered a good-enough batsman to merit a place in the one-day squad to face the Australians. By the end of the year, he was the only Englishman who could justifiably expect a place in anyone's World XI.'

Russell played an impressive 465 first class county matches, scoring more than 16,000 runs.
