Local cricket: Liverpool ECHO knockout will NOT take place in 2021

The Liverpool ECHO Cup will not take place this year, Love Lane Liverpool Competition chiefs have confirmed.

The knockout - open to clubs from around the region not just those in the Competition itself - has run since 1974, in various formats.

It didn't run last year as Covid laid waste to much of the fixture list. And this year, with the Competition still recovering from the effects of the pandemic and associated lockdowns, the management committee have decided to focus on its core competitions.

The men's senior leagues have 11 divisions in all, with the Competition also running junior and women's and girls sections.

Chairman John Williams said: "We understand clubs will be disappointed as it is a popular competition.

"However, we are fully committed to continuing next year."

At its inception, the tournament was a straight, unseeded knockout of 20-over games until the final, which was 40 overs per side. Between 1978 and 2015, both sides in the final batted two 20-over innings; the second innings was dropped from 2016.

Chester Boughton Hall are the current holders, having beaten Formby by 20 runs in the 2019 final.
