Leicester has been placed under a local lockdown by the Government after a spike in coronavirus cases.
This means that non-essential shops in the city will be closed from today (June 30) and schools will close from Thursday (July 2).
The Government has said that these measures will be reviewed in two weeks time but there is no guarantee the local lockdown will be relaxed then.
The numbers of cases in the East Midlands city account for 10% of all positive cases in the country over the past week – meaning the planned easing of restrictions on Saturday will not take place there, with people in the city advised against all but essential travel.
Boris Johnson promised a “whack-a-mole” approach to local outbreaks but the government has been accused of responding too slowly to Leicester, where concerns were raised weeks ago.
According to The Mirror, new confirmed cases have been rising across 36 of the 151 upper-tier local authorities in England.
Two of these places, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire are close to Bristol.
Gloucestershire
According to the government, there have been three new cases of coronavirus confirmed in Gloucestershire this week.
Whilst this is relatively low, these new cases are concentrated across three areas of Gloucestershire including the Cotswolds, Stroud and Tewkesbury.
What's more, Tewkesbury has recorded its first case in a month after the borough had not been touched by coronavirus since May 24.
There are currently 1,385 recorded coronavirus cases in Gloucestershire with the rates per 100,000 people medium at 218.6.
If the rate of infection per 100,000 was to increase at a steady rate or suddenly then Gloucestershire is an area near Bristol which could go into a local lockdown.
Wiltshire
Wiltshire currently has a relatively low infection rate per 100,000 people, currently standing at 110.4
The county also has fewer confirmed coronavirus cases in comparison to Gloucestershire and Bristol, with case numbers currently standing at 550.
However, case numbers have been on the rise in Wiltshire over recent days.
There have now been 311,965 positive tests for Coronavirus in the UK, with 43,575 deaths of people who had a positive test result.
