Local calls for Bluebell graveyard TLC as overgrown grass and weeds crowd graves

A South Dublin graveyard is in need of some TLC as overgrown grass and weeds crowd the graves, according to a Councillor.

Cllr Francis Timmons sits on South Dublin County Council, but his great-grandparents are buried in Bluebell Cemetery, which is under the jurisdiction of Dublin City Council.

As part of their Biodiversity Action Plan, the Council ceased the spraying of herbicides in many of its parks and public spaces.

But, as it stands, there is no special exemption yet for cemeteries.

And Cllr Timmons believes that the issue needs to be sorted "as soon as possible".

Pictures taken recently by Cllr Timmons show the graveyard looking in an unkempt state, with some graves completely obscured by the overgrowth.

"It's awful to hear that Bluebell cemetery, where my great grandparents are buried, is so overgrown," he said.

"This must be sorted as soon as possible.

"I would appeal to all that have family, friends and loved ones buried there and to contact the Council immediately so they can take action to clean up the overgrowth at the Cemetery. I am calling for immediate action.

"I'm appalled at the lack of respect for all the deceased that are buried there."

Dublin City Council said that the grasses in the graveyard are due to be strimmed in September.

They also added that there is hope that a special plan for burial sites can be in place by next year.

They told Dublin Live: "Dublin City Council ceased the spraying of herbicides as part of its Biodiversity Action Plan and because of the knowledge that the chemicals were harmful to flora and fauna.

"The grasses and wildflowers will now be strimmed twice a year and the next strim is due in September.

T"he draft Burial Places Strategy recently published by the council proposes that all burial sites would have a site specific conservation management report and action plan which will involve a consultation with the local community.

"It is hoped that this can progress in 2022."
