Local authority apologises over council tax blunder

West Dunbartonshire Council has apologised after taxpayers were wrongly hit with reminders over unpaid council tax.

Residents who had paid their bill on time were shocked when they were sent notices telling them to make their April payment.

However, after calls from confused taxpayers, it was revealed that some payments had not been applied to the relevant accounts.

The local authority says a “small number” of residents were affected by the administrative error.

Letters have now been sent out to residents informing them of the mistake. One Dumbarton man, who contacted the Lennox Herald, said: “I know quite a few folk have received letters saying they haven’t paid their council tax when they have.

“One of my friends had paid his council tax two months in advance and still received a letter.

“It makes you wonder how much this has ended up costing the council in sending out the reminder letters and then the apologies.”

A spokeswoman for the council told the Lennox Herald: “Due to an administrative
error, some council tax payments were not applied to the relevant accounts and this resulted in a small number of residents receiving a reminder notice for their April instalment.”

“She added: “We have issued a letter to everyone affected advising them of this and apologising for any inconvenience caused.”
