Lobster and charcuterie boards: How the Bigg Market has gone upmarket with al fresco dining

If you're missing some al fresco dining like that in Spain or the south of France - just head down to Newcastle’s Bigg Market!

Dating all the way back to the Middle Ages, the Bigg Market has had a bit of a reputation for big and rowdy nights out - but with new bars and restaurants popping up in the area, it’s now going through something of a transformation.

With Covid restrictions meaning that many restaurants have had to adapt to provide outdoor seating, the area has recently become a hotspot for dining outdoors.

Hibou Blanc bar and restaurant opened in the Bigg Market in late 2019, but soon had to close its doors due to lockdown.

When restrictions eased, staff set about planning how to keep the restaurant going. This involved not only moving business outside, but changing the menu to be more al-fresco-friendly.

Watch our video above to see how the Bigg Market has been transformed.

The change was a hit with customers both old and new, with lots of us keen to get back out again after months of being stuck indoors.

If you head to Hibou Blanc, you can enjoy anything from lobster ravioli to beef shin pappardelle - and you can still take advantage of the outdoor dining, as the restaurant plans to keep the space open, even when the indoor space reopens on May 17th. You’ll just need to keep an eye on the unpredictable North East weather!
