A loaded gun was 'discarded' during a police chase in Moss Side.
Police were alerted to a suspicious vehicle on Platt Lane at around 4.30pm on Friday.
The white Skoda Fabia failed to stop when approached by police. Officers then launched a pursuit of the car.
A witness contacted police around 15 minutes after spotting a loaded firearm being discarded on Broadfield Road during the chase.
The gun was recovered for forensic examination.
An area of Parkfield Road in Fallowfield was also sealed off as part of the investigation.
Patrol cars and police vans full of evidence bags could be seen behind the cordon.
A police sniffer dog was seen working in the area.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers on patrol in Moss Side were alerted to a suspicious vehicle at around 4.30pm on Friday 18 December on Platt Lane.
"The vehicle - a white Skoda Fabia - failed to stop on police request and a short pursuit ensued.
"At around 4.45pm a witness called police reporting that a loaded firearm had been seen to be discarded during the pursuit on Broadfield Road.
"The firearm has been recovered for forensic examination.
"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."
