LNP to retain Gold Coast seat of Currumbin following by-election

The LNP has held on to the marginal Gold Coast seat of Currumbin in the Queensland weekend by-election, according to ABC election analyst Antony Green.

Mr Green said he had called Currumbin for the LNP candidate Laura Gerber, despite a small swing towards Labor.

He said strong support in postal votes pushed Ms Gerber slightly ahead.

With almost 70 per cent counted, LNP newcomer Ms Gerber holds more than 51 per cent of the votes on a two-party preference count, nudging her just ahead of Labor's Kaylee Campradt.

"The LNP are more than 500 votes ahead with not enough outstanding votes to overturn the lead," Mr Green said.

"There was a 2 per cent swing against the LNP — not great in a seat you hold, but there were local circumstances."

Ms Gerber issued a statement this afternoon thanking her team.

"I will fight hard for Currumbin and I will be straight to work tomorrow," she said.

"I am also sorry that the people of Currumbin were made to vote during a global pandemic.

"I am looking forward to joining Deb Frecklington's team because the coronavirus means more than ever, Queensland needs a government that can build a strong economy to create and protect local jobs."

The result leaves both major parties with the same seats prior to the weekend by-elections, after Labor's Lance McCallum secured Bundamba, in the wake of maverick MP Jo-Ann Miller's departure.

Despite his win, the contest in the Ipswich-based seat saw a swing against Labor of more than 10 per cent, with One Nation scooping up about 28 per cent of the primary vote.

The fight for Currumbin had its own controversies, after departing MP Jann Stuckey slammed the LNP following her resignation, saying she was ostracised for supporting Labor's abortion decriminalisation bill in 2018.

Ms Stuckey also criticised the party over its decision to support Ms Gerber, over her preferred replacement — lawyer Chris Crawford.
