LNER tells passengers NOT to travel as UK endures hottest July on record

Train passengers have been warned NOT to travel as soaring temperatures brought services to a halt.

Temperatures topped 38C on Thursday in what is the hottest day in July in British history.

But the weather caused chaos on the East Coast Main Line route, which links London to Newcastle .

Record high temperatures saw a string of trains cancelled at London King's Cross station.

Now, operator London North Eastern Railway (LNER) is advising customers against travelling for the rest of Thursday.

Warrick Dent, LNER safety and operations director, said: “We apologise to customers for the inevitable inconvenience this will cause our customers.

"Tickets for today, Thursday July 25 will be valid for travel on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

"Alternatively, customers can apply for a refund if they no longer wish to travel.”

The company, which manages Newcastle's Central Station , blamed problems with infrastructure in Peterborough for the scrapped services.

They say staff are working hard to ensure the comfort and safety of passengers, as temperatures continue to sizzle.

For anyone requiring extra help, support or information, customers are advised to contact LNER Customer Services via the LNER website, social media or the customer contact centre on 03457 225 333.
