LNER looking for Newcastle based apprentice train drivers with £28,000 starting salary

Rail company LNER is on the hunt for a new generation of drivers to join its team as part of the roll out of its new fleet of Azuma trains.

It is looking to take on an apprentice train driver based at its Newcastle depot with further similar job opportunities promised across its other depots in the near future.

The role, which will involve a year-long training programme, will see apprentices paid a minimum of £28,711, with the salary rising once qualified.

Readers will have to be quick as the Newcastle vacancy expires today. However LNER bosses advise those interested to sign up to its job alerts to get to hear of future vacancies when they happen.

According to LNER, the role will involve a 35-hour working week to begin with, while apprentices will work towards a Level 3 qualification.

The successful applicant will go back to school for an intensive training programme designed to give them the foundations to become a professional Qualified Train Driver.

This will take around 52 weeks to complete, with the first 16 weeks will involve classroom-based learning, including homework.

The applicant will be assessed along the way and when they have completed the theory-based element and passed their assessments, they will progress to driving a train on the LNER network with real customers on board, supervised by an experienced driver.

LNER said: "This is an exciting opportunity that doesn't come around very often, so if you're interested in training to become a Driver now is the time.

"As a highly sought-after role and one of great responsibility, it is important that we have a thorough selection process."
