LNER issues 'do not travel' warning as trains to Scotland disrupted

LNER has issued a "do not travel" warning to passengers after a number of incidents on a major rail route.

Trains between London King's Cross and Edinburgh Waverley on the East Coast Main Line are facing significant disruption until the end of Sunday.

Emergency repairs to a bridge has forced the closure of the line between Newcastle and Darlington.

Meanwhile, overrunning engineering works also saw lines shut between Newcastle and Berwick, although that section of the route reopened at around 10am.

Elsewhere, a points failure between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Dunbar has increased delays, with those managing to travel facing several unplanned stops during their journeys.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said earlier on Sunday: "We're sorry for the disruption customers are experiencing between London King's Cross and Edinburgh at present.

"A problem with a bridge means that the line is blocked between Darlington and Berwick-upon-Tweed. Network Rail engineers are on site and working to reopen the line as soon as possible.

"Customers are asked to check with train operators for the latest train running information".

Due to the incidents, LNER, CrossCountry, Lumo, Northern and TransPennine Express services have been disrupted.

LNER tickets dated for Sunday can be used on any of its services up to and including Tuesday, August 12, or used on Sunday on some CrossCountry services.

TransPennine Express, Northern and CrossCountry are permitting customers to use their tickets on each others' services, while Lumo is allowing customers to use southbound LNER services from York towards King's Cross.

Replacement bus services have also been sourced to travel between Edinburgh and Newcastle.

A spokesperson for LNER told TeesideLive: "In terms of information about travel – and the impact this is having on LNER services – we are advising that customers DO NOT TRAVEL between London King's Cross and Edinburgh."
