The Libyan National Army continued on Wednesday its march on the capital, Tripoli.
Khalifa Haftar’s forces announced that the army captured a barracks of Osama al-Juwaili’s Fourth Brigade in the Aziziya area around 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Tripoli after "ferocious clashes".
It said several fighters loyal to Fayez al-Sarraj’s Government of National Accord (GNA) had been detained and their weapons seized.
LNA forces appear to be advancing on two fronts, from the south and southeast of Tripoli, while coastal roads to the east and west of the city are defended by fighters loyal to the GNA.
The United Nations said at least 4,500 Tripoli residents had been displaced, most moving away from homes in conflict areas to safer districts. Many more were trapped, it said.
Meanwhile, parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh addressed a message to president of the UN Security Council about the operation against Tripoli.
He stressed that the operation was aimed at “protecting the democratic path and eliminating international terrorism.”
The parliament, which was elected directly by the people, appointed the commander of the military and tasked him with his duties.
Saleh delivered his message shortly before the Security Council was set to meet to discuss the situation in Libya.
