Online banking websites crash on a 'literal Bank Holiday'

Thousands of customers who bank with Halifax, Lloyds, and Bank of Scotland customers experienced problems with online banking on the first day of the new year.

Online banking was down for all three banks across large parts of the UK as the websites crashed. Halifax and Lloyds has apologised for the "issues" and a spokesman said they were working on resolving them as a priority.

In a statement both said: "We know some customers are having issues with internet and/or mobile banking. We're sorry about this and we're working to have it back to normal soon."

Bank of Scotland, which is also part of the same company, did not release a statement, according to Wales Online .

Lloyds said they were working on the problem but "if you urgently need to transfer funds you can call our phone bank team on 0345 300 0000 and they would be able to look at it for you".

One customer said: "Obviously the millennium bug overslept by 20 years." Another added: "Lloyds taking the 'bank holiday' a little too literally." Another agreed, saying: "Back in the day a bank holiday was truly a bank holiday. You knew where you stood. ah nostalgia..."

According to Down Detector, the three banks first started having trouble at 7am - and some Lloyds customers reported it seemed to be up and running at 11.20am.
