Lloyds Bank warns customers over scam that could empty your account

Lloyds Bank has issued a warning after customers were targeted with a scam which could see your bank account empties.

People are being sent text messages which appear to be from Lloyds Bank, claiming that a new paired device and a new payee have been added to your account, reports The Star.

The scam reads: “LLOYDS: A new device has successfully paired onto your account on 27/03. If this was not you, please visit: http://unauthorised-payee-connect.com."

Another text said: “LLOYDS ALERTS: New payee R MICHAELS was successfully added on 27/03/2021.

“If this was NOT you, please immediately visit: https://verifypayee.security.com."

Scam text messages such as these are known as “smashing” – and they’re used by cybercriminals to get access to your account.

When you click on the link you are re-directed to an official looking site and asked to enter personal or banking details.

Do not fill in this information or scammers may be able to access your funds.

Lloyds Bank sent out a message to customers warning: “This is indeed a scam message and hasn’t been sent by us. Please don’t click on the link and delete the message.

“You can also use 7726 to report the scam text for free to your network provider - thank you for letting us know.”

The bank confirmed that it would never message customers to ask for banking or personal details.

It said people should be vigilant for unexpected messages – and to keep an eye out for spelling or grammar mistakes in correspondence as this can be an indicator that the text is unofficial.
