Lloyds and Halifax online banking websites and apps went down with thousands of customers affected

Frustrated Lloyds and Halifax customers were unable to access their online banking accounts on Monday evening as both of the bank's websites and apps went down.

Outage monitor Down Detector registered a surge of customers with Lloyds and Halifax (a subsidiary of Lloyds Banking Group) reporting that they were unable to access their online banking accounts. The website claimed that more than 5,000 reports were made in the past 24 hours.

Many people reported on social media that they were unable to log onto the Lloyds website and app, which displayed a message saying: "Server connection has failed".

Halifax customers trying to access their online banking accounts on its mobile app received a message saying "app launch failed" or "Sorry, we're experiencing technical problems. Please try again later".

Those trying to access the Halifax website were seeing a message that says: "This site can't be reached. The webpage might be temporarily down or it may have moved".

Both banks apologised for the technical problem and services returned to normal before 10pm.

A spokesman for Lloyds Banking Group said: "Internet banking is now back to normal. We're sorry that our customers had issues with it this evening.

"We'll make sure customers are not out of pocket as a result.”
