Llanelli's reindeer parade and food and drink festival have been cancelled due to coronavirus

Two popular events held in Llanelli town centre have been cancelled due to coronavirus.

Neither the annual reindeer parade or the food and drink festival will go ahead this year because of the pandemic.

The reindeer parade sees crowds of people line the town centre streets to watch Santa and his reindeer arrive.

Bands and children's characters all parade through the town centre before ending up at Spring Gardens where there's a chance to get a closer look at the reindeer.

The town's food and drink festival was launched in 2018 and its success saw it return last year as the "biggest event ever", according to organisers.

Last year there were more than 50 stalls offering the likes of wood-fired pizzas, waffles and gin over the course of a weekend in October.

A Halloween-based event due to take place next month which would have seen dinosaurs visiting Llanelli town centre has also been cancelled.

Ymlaen Llanelli, the town's business improvement district which organises the events, said that they are "absolutely devastated" that the events can't be held "safely" in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement they said: "We’re sad to announce that we’re now officially cancelling our remaining 2020 events: Llanelli Food and Drink Festival, Jurassic Halloween, and Llanelli Reindeer Parade.

"We’re absolutely devastated.

"These events are some of our most popular, and we really wanted to be able to bring some cheer to everyone at the end of the year, but we simply can’t hold any of these events safely.

"Llanelli Food and Drink Festival 2019 was our biggest event ever, and we can’t wait to hopefully bring it back next year along with everything else, all bigger and better than ever before.

"When we first began creating our 2020 events programme this time last year, there’s no way we could have foreseen such an extraordinary situation.

"We planned an exciting year of our best events yet, and we’re incredibly sad that we could only hold one of them.

"We’re now looking into Covid-safe initiatives we can do over the coming months and in the lead up to Christmas to keep spirits up, whether it’s days like our #GoodToBeBack Saturday or something completely new.

"If you’re a BID business and you have any ideas of things we could do to help you, get in touch and we’ll see what we can do."
