Llanelli parking charges slashed to £1 in bid to help struggling town centre in run-up to Christmas

Parking charges at a Llanelli multi-storey car park have been slashed to just £1 in a bid to give the town a boost in the run-up to Christmas.

Carmarthenshire Council has announced the offer that will apply to Murray Street Car Park in the centre of town.

The offer, which will see customers charged £1 for all-day parking, will start on Saturday, October 26 and run for a period of 11 weeks until and including Saturday, January 11 next year.

The move is being launched by the county council and Ymlaen Llanelli - a Business Improvement District led by town centre businesses - in a bid to support traders and attract more people into the heart of Llanelli in the run-up to Christmas and into the New Year period.

This new offer adds to the free parking available at council car parks in Llanelli between 10am and 4pm every Monday and Tuesday.

“In conjunction with Ymlaen Llanelli, we are pleased to be able to offer this reduction in parking,” said executive board member for car parking at Carmarthenshire Council, Hazel Evans.

“We hope it will encourage more shoppers to stay in the town as well as supporting our traders in the run up to the festive season and then for the January sales.”

While the £1 Saturday deal does not officially begin until October 26, there is free parking across the town this Saturday to coincide with the return of the Llanelli Food and Drink Festival .

Meanwhile, on Saturday, November 9, parking at the Murray Street multi-storey will be completely free along with other sites in Church Street, Thomas/Edgar Street, Vauxhall Road, and East Gate.

With the £1 parking deal being in effect up to and throughout the Christmas and New Year period, it is hoped that local businesses in Llanelli will reap the benefit and that the scheme will give the town centre a much-needed shot in the arm.

Chair of Ymlaen Llanelli, Lesley Richards, said: “We are so happy to be able to provide the £1 parking offer to encourage more people into town.

“We have some wonderful businesses and hope that the Christmas period will be a profitable one for the whole of the town centre.”
