Lizzo has responded to her online critics, telling Twitter trolls to “keep my name out ya mouth” after she was accused of fuelling the obesity epidemic in America.
The plus-size singer and body positivity activist has often spoken out about the “psychological toll” of growing up and not seeing women and girls who looked like her on television.
However, Lizzo’s campaigning has led some to criticise her for using body positivity as a marketing tool.
One Twitter user posted a picture of the singer on stage with the caption: “Lizzo popular is because there is an obesity epidemic in America.
“Rather than encouraging people to do better, we are simply lying to them and telling them that they are just fine the way they are. Unfortunately, many of these people are dying from diabetes and heart disease.”
Lizzo responded by retweeting them and writing: “I’m popular because I write good songs and I’m talented and perform high energy hour and a half shows filled with love. The only person who needs to do better is you.
“Keep my name out ya mouth & look in the mirror before you come for me. Here’s the attention you ordered.”
Earlier this year, Lizzo’s single “Truth Hurts” went to number one on the US Billboard charts, making her the first solo black female singer to reach the spot since Rihanna in 2012.
