Lizzie McGuire reboot is put on hold because it's 'not family-friendly enough' for Disney

The Lizzie McGuire reboot has been scrapped, with reports claiming that the show wasn't "family-friendly" enough for Disney.

Hilary Duff, who plays the title character, had been excitedly updating fans with behind-the-scenes photos of the show, which was due to drop on new streaming platform Disney Plus at some point this year.

The company has now confirmed that the show has been put on hold because it doesn't meet the "high expectations" of fans.

And Hilary, 32, has since hinted that the decision was made because bosses felt the updated version was a bit too adult for its young target audience.

Her comments came after a spokesperson for Disney plus said: "Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series.

"After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the show."

Terri Minsky, the original series creator, has now stepped down from the series.

Disney also confirmed that Love, Victor has been moved to Hulu, with sources claiming that bosses thought it was inappropriate for the family-friendly brand.

The show is a spin-off of Love, Simon, a teen movie that explored a teenage boy's struggles to come out as gay.

Sources told Variety that the streaming service "felt many issues explored on the show Love, Simon, including alcohol use and sexual exploration, would not fit in with the family-friendly content on Disney Plus."

Hilary then shared a screenshot of one of the reports, hinting that the decision to put Lizzie McGuire on hold was because of the same reasons.

She drew a circle around a headline that read "Love, Simon TV show pulled from Disney+ as it's not 'family friendly'" and then wrote "Sounds familiar..."

Mirror Online has contacted Disney for comment.

Lizzie McGuire ran for two seasons between 2001 and 2004.

It followed Lizzie and her friends as they tried to get through middle school, dealing with crushes, bullies and her relationships with her family.

Hilary also voiced an animated version of Lizzie, who would comment on the episode's events throughout.

There was even a film, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, which saw the teenager and her friends visit Rome where she was mistaken for a fictional Italian popstar.
