Lizzie Cundy tried to set up Meghan Markle and Ashley Cole after Cheryl split

Lizzie Cundy has revealed she tried to set Meghan Markle up with footballer Ashley Cole.

The Duchess of Sussex is happily married to Prince Harry , with the couple welcoming baby Archie this month, but things could have been very different.

Speaking on today's This Morning, Lizzie explained that she attempted to get the pair together after his split from Cheryl in 2010.

She said the pair got on "like a house on fire" at a charity event and Meghan revealed she was looking for a British boyfriend.

Lizzie explained: "She wanted to find a boyfriend. She said 'I would like a British boyfriend'."

When Lizzie asked if she wanted a celebrity, Meghan replied: "Why not?"

Prompted by Eamonn Holmes, she jokingly claimed that she told Meghan that "unfortunately" the This Morning presenter was taken.

However, Lizzie asked Meghan whether she wanted to be set up with a footballer and she scrolled through her contacts.

She continued: "But I did actually say 'do you like footballers?' As they were on my phone.

"I let her have a look through. And actually Ashley Cole had just split up from Cheryl. They looked similar, Dark, petite. So I was getting that together."

Lizzie admitted she didn't even know who the Suits star was when they first met at a charity event.

She confessed: "I didn't know who Meghan was. I was at this big charity pre-dinner before a big charity event. A few years before Harry.

"They said 'Lizzie will you sit next to this girl. She doesn't know anyone in London'. I said 'who is she? Meghan Markle ? I haven't got a clue'.

"They said 'she's flown in from Vancouver'. I said 'fine I'll look after her'.

"In fact we got on like a house on fire. She was so funny. She loved London."

It had been previously revealed that Meghan had exchanged messages with Matt Cardle, who won The X Factor in 2010, as her search for love continued.

By then, Meghan had divorced her first husband, Trevor Engelson, and she was hoping for the chance to find a new partner when she visited London.
