Liz Truss: Pointless fans laugh as question about serving Prime Ministers pops up on show

Pointless fans were unable to control their laughter after the first question on this evening’s show (October 20) appeared more topically relevant that usual. The first question on the BBC One quiz show asked contestants to name Prime Ministers who had served for longer than two years.

Viewers couldn't help but see the funny side after news broke today that Prime Minister Liz Truss was resigning from her position. Earlier today, Mrs Truss announced there would be a new leader of the Conservative party by the end of next week.

The relevancy of today's Pointless question was not lost on viewers, who took to the social media site Twitter to express their humour about the very first question. Fans couldn't believe it when Alexander Armstrong, show host, kicked off the episode by asking the four pairs to name 'British Prime Ministers who served for two years or longer'.

This excludes most recent Prime Minister, Liz Truss, who has served for just 44 days.

One viewer said: "First question of the day," followed by a number of laughing emojis, while another said it was 'amazing timing' for the first category. A third viewer said: "Oh the irony that the first #Pointless category is “politicians and their periods of office."

"Ooooh the shade," said someone else, adding that they 'had to know what [they're] doing.' Episodes of the show are filmed in advance of the air time.

Laurence Laverne, who today presented her first episode of Pointless, tweeted that the show was 'pre-recorded'. She said: "My first category on #Pointless: British PMs and how long they lasted. Just to flag, we pre-recorded the programme."

Another viewer added that they thought the BBC had 'done this on purpose' given the timing of the question.
