Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak still offering no answers on cost of living crisis

Two speeches, two hours of cross examination and questions and still no answers on the cost of living crisis.

The Tory hustings in Perth went along the same old tramlines, with an added Caledonian twist.

There was guaranteed applause for Liz Truss ruling out a second referendum and Rishi Sunak saying he wanted to take on and beat Nicola Sturgeon.

But anyone looking for help on the biggest issue facing most voters may as well have switched off after 15 minutes.

Those left hanging on the line heard Rishi Sunak rule out freezing the energy price cap in October, as Labour has demanded to help hard-pressed families.

It was Liz Truss, the favourite in the race, who really ducked the question.

Other than pausing the green energy levy, she outright refused to say what she would offer people about to be hit by catastrophic energy bills.

After tax cuts and energy supply issues, her third priority, she said weakly, is “looking at what else we can do.”

That did her no harm in the hall.

Truss was better briefed on Scotland and knew that bashing the SNP was the way to curry favour.

She looks very confident of being sworn in as Prime Minister in less than three weeks time.

She won’t be able to duck the cost of living crisis then.
