Livingston Women's midfield ace confident Lionesses can thrive under pressure of table-topping status

Livingston Women’s ace Shannon Mulligan believes the Lionesses can thrive under the pressure of being Championship table-toppers.

A 3-1 home win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle last weekend ensured Paul Jaconelli’s side boasted a three point lead at the top of the third tier.

And Mulligan insists the side are in no mood to let that slip away as they prepare for an away trip to face Morton on Sunday.

The Lionesses, along with Renfrew and Rossvale, have opened up a gap with the top three sides pulling away from the rest of the table.

There’s plenty of matches left, though, and the midfielder is under no illusion as to how difficult every game will be – starting with this weekend’s away day.

Speaking to the Courier, she said: “There is pressure that comes with being at the top end of the table but it’s good pressure.

“There is a bit of a gap between the top three and the rest of the league right now but that can change quickly. We just need to focus on ourselves and not pay any attention to anything else.”

Mulligan, who netted her fifth of the season in the win over Inverness, believes the Lionesses are starting to show their full potential and is confident they will hold firm in their push for promotion.

She said: “We’ve been winning games this season but really we’ve not been playing great football.

“We’ve been battling and showing great fight and determination and digging out some of our results but I think against Inverness we played some really good football.

“I think we’re starting to show that side of our game a wee bit more now and it’s about kicking on and keeping that going.

“It feels like that game might end up being a bit of a turning point – especially with it coming off the back of the cup defeat against Rossvale.”

As for the trip to Morton, she said: “We know it’s going to be a very hard game, just like it was when we played them at home.

“It’s a really competitive league this season and everyone is capable of beating everyone else so we’re going into the game knowing that we have to be at our best and play well.

“If we can do that, we’re confident that we can pick up the three points and keep ourselves at the top of the table.”
