Livingston Women's boss Paul Jaconelli admits draw with Edinburgh City felt like defeat after conceding late goals

Livingston Women's boss Paul Jaconelli admits squandered chances and mistakes saw his side have to settle for a point against Edinburgh City, writes Angus McGregor .

The Lionesses let slip a 3-1 lead in the Championship South clash by conceding twice late on and having to take share of the spoils on Sunday.

The hosts had plenty of chances to punish the table-toppers but were ultimately held to a draw, dropping Livi down to fifth place.

They looked comfortable up until the 80th minute when a couple of lapses of concentration would cost the home side the victory. There were plenty of chances from Livi but they were unable to capitalise on their sustained pressure to put the game out of sight, leaving Jaconelli bemused at the result.

He said: “They must be going away thinking how have we drawn that? That’s football sometimes though. We had three one-on-ones and hit the bar twice as well.”

Livingston’s performance was deserving of high praise, with the home side working tirelessly and creating a number of chance, putting them in a favourable position for most of the game.

It would mainly be the West Lothian side's own doing that caused themselves issues, with Jaconelli adding: "I think we mainly put ourselves in bother. I think we dominated the game, we won our battles and what we needed was the ball in the net.

"I thought at 3-1 that they were finished and we let them back into it.”

To have scored three goals against the league leaders in such a commanding performance would usually be something that leaves a side feeling happy with their efforts but the result has left a sour feeling that the team will learn from.

Jaconelli stated: “We put a lot into that game and mistakes happen sometimes. We have to gather ourselves now as we’re all disappointed and hurting but we’ve just got to move on.

"It’s a draw but it very much feels like a defeat.”

First half goals from Ashley Fish and Rachel Walkingshaw had put Livi in control before Nicole Rutherford reduced the gap with a header.

A stunning long-range effort from Jen Dodds appeared to swing the game back firmly in Livingston's favour but City's late double salvo took the win away.
