Livingston teenager signs for Scotland's only professional men's basketball team

Livingston’s Callum Mortimer has signed with the Glasgow Rocks - Scotland’s only professional men’s basketball team for the 2020/21 season.

The 17-year-old became the club’s youngest ever player and scorer during his rookie season last year and will be aiming to take further steps forward during his second campaign in the British Basketball League.

Mortimer, who started his career as a youth player with the West Lothian Wolves, was signed by former coach Vincent Lavandier while still a high school student but proved he could mix it with the best British basketball has to offer when called upon.

New Rocks coach Gareth Murray, who will also continue as a player with the Emirates Arena outfit, said: “Callum is a player I have coached previously at camps in Scotland and played with him last year.

“He is a young player that is focused on his basketball but understands that his education is very important.

“Speaking with him and his parents over the summer, he decided he wanted to continue with us while taking a year off from studying. He already has a place at university but wants to focus on his basketball.

“He is a welcome addition to the squad. He is a very quiet person but is willing to work hard to improve. If I’m honest he reminds me of myself when I was younger. I’m glad I can continue this opportunity for him.”

The 6’5’’ guard is hoping to attend university next year in Scotland, or secure a scholarship to continue his basketball development in the States.

He commented: “I want to thank Gareth and The Rocks for giving me another opportunity to work on and develop my game and continue where Vincent left off.

“I have missed playing and can’t wait to meet, train and compete with the guys. I know it’s going to be hard work but I am ready to learn and excited for this season to start.”

Fixtures have yet to be released but the BBL expects to get their season underway next month.
