Livingston star Chris Erskine: Season should be played to a finish to avoid uproar

Livingston midfielder Chris Erskine reckons the SPFL season should be played to a finish - because any other decision would lead to uproar in Scottish football.

The Lions star has helped the West Lothian side up to fifth in the Scottish Premiership, putting them on course for a top six finish.

But debate rages on about the best course of action that should be taken for the season due to the coronavirus shutdown.

UEFA have warned that European places are at risk if the SPFL call a halt to the season.

And Erskine said: "I think everybody's preference would be for the league to finish.

"I think there's too many questions and too many things that people would complain about if it gets cancelled.

"If it gets taken out of our hands by the Government and things like that, then that's what has to happen.

"But everyone's preference is to finish it when we start back.

"That way, whoever wins the league wins it fair and square, whoever gets relegated is relegated fairly.

"I'm glad I'm not the one making the decision, put it that way.

"It's going to be such a difficult decision."

Livi have taken four points from a possible nine off of champions-elect Celtic this season and have proved to be a real force under Gary Holt.

Erskine has made 14 appearances for Livi this season, with an injury meaning he hasn't kicked a ball since January.

But he hopes he can be back on the pitch soon and help Livi complete what has been a fantastic season so far.

He said: "The boys have been brilliant again this season. We just keep surprising people.

"We've got a bit of a reputation for being a long-ball team and we do do that, we get the ball forward quickly, but we've got really good players who can hurt you as well.

"We get the good players on the ball in the final third and we've done really well.

"To be in the position we are in with only a number of games to go is great for a club of Livi's size and budget.

"Nobody knows when we'll be back obviously.

"But the club have provided us with our own workout plans to keep us ticking over and the boys have all to download an app and submit results to the club, so they can keep track of our fitness.

"Hopefully, we get the chance to finish the season."
