Livingston Handball Club fall to defeat in EHF Challenge Cup clash

Livingston Handball Club gave a great account of themselves in defeat to Dicken of Finland in their European Handball Federation Challenge Cup clash at the Oriam in Edinburgh.

In what was the first European handball fixture in Scotland for more than 20 years, Livi suffered a 40-20 loss in the first leg on Saturday before being beaten 42-13 the following day in the second leg.

However, the young Livingston side can take plenty of encouragement from both games, which featured some impressive play at times, and build on it for the future.

Their opponents had reached the quarter-finals last term, being knocked out by eventual champions CSM Bucharest and will be favoured to go far in the competition once again.

Livingston head coach Gary McCafferty took plenty of positives from the weekend, saying: “It’s been a great opportunity for Scottish handball and we can take a lot from the whole experience. The boys now know very clearly the areas they need to work on but we can take a lot of encouraging things from this, especially the first match where the score could easily have been much closer.”
