Livingston darts ace Peter Wright guides Scotland to World Cup title

Livingston-born Peter Wright helped guide Scotland to World Cup of Darts glory yesterday as they defeated Austria to be crowned world champions.

It's the second time in three years that the flamboyant 'Snakebite' has clinched the trophy, winning alongside John Henderson this year having partnered Gary Anderson to glory two years ago.

The pair wept tears of joy after Wright's winning dart against Mensur Suljovic clinched a 3-1 triumph in the final in Jena, Germany.

The Scots had defeated third seeds Netherlands in the quarter-finals before getting the better of defending champions and second favourites Wales in the semi-finals.

Wright, who won the 2020 PDC World Championship, paid tribute to his partner who won the first major tournament of his career, saying: "I was very nervous but we’re only here because John carried me throughout this tournament.

“It’s been an absolute privilege to play with this man, my friend John. Watch out world because John’s coming for you.”

Huntly man Henderson added: "To come back home as a World Champion, I’m speechless. Hopefully I can kickstart my career now. I’ve said from day one it’s an honour to play with Peter.

“I don’t know how he managed to keep his nerve in the last game. He’s a legend.”
