Livingston college hosts STEM Olympics

West Lothian College held the finals of the inaugural STEM Olympics recently.

The event saw winners from heats held earlier the year make their way to the colleges Livingston campus to take part in a wide array of events to find out which school would win the STEM Olympics and take home the prestigious Tam Dalyell Trophy.

The event was organised by the college with funding from the Tam Dalyell legacy fund to encourage young people in to STEM related subjects from a young age.

The finalists took part in many challenges including tower building, rocket car time trials, making bath bombs, circuit training and food science. Some rare rays of sunshine allowed the events to be held indoors and outdoors and very much gave the campus an “Olympic village” feel with activities taking place around every corner.

Teams from Our Lady’s Primary School, St Columba’s Primary School, St Anthony’s Primary School, Linlithgow Primary School, Springfield Primary School and St Thomas’s Primary School all took place in the STEM Olympics with a team from Eastertoun Primary School taking home the much coveted Tam Dalyell Trophy which was presented by Tam’s wife Kathleen.

Colin Miller, head of external service at West Lothian College said: “The finals of the STEM Olympics were a huge success. A huge thank you to all the schools that took part and to the employers that took time out their schedules to come along and support the students and provide activities. It really is fantastic to see so many young people engged with STEM. A huge thank you has to also go to the Dalyell family for all the support they have given this event. We are already looking forward to the next STEM Olympics.”
