Livingston boss Gary Holt trusting players to manage pre-season fitness

Livingston boss Gary Holt admits the excitement of preparing for the new season has to be tempered by ensuring his players aren't pushed too hard in training.

The Lions are in their second week of pre-season and beginning to ramp up preparations for the new campaign but the gaffer is making sure the squad don't overdo it in training.

He said: “With the fixtures coming out on Monday, that adds a wee bit of spice to things because it makes the new season real, in a sense, and it’s not that long until we play now.

“It’s a shortened pre-season but we’re doing everything we can to get the boys up to speed without breaking them. That’s the most important thing.

“We need to try and get everyone up and running with as few injuries as possible. We know we’re going to pick up some niggling injuries because of how long they’ve been off.

“They’re a good bunch and they need to be honest with us. If they feel any wee niggles tell us. There’s no point in pushing through and then being out for longer. We don’t need that kind of bravado.

“We need them to be open and honest and as a coaching staff we need to recognise that guys might not train the following day or that afternoon and realise that’s the best thing long-term for everyone.”
