Livingston boss David Martindale says his players deserve 'huge credit' for defensive display in draw with Celtic

David Martindale says his Livingston players should be applauded for the defensive masterclass they produced to earn a draw at Celtic Park.

The hosts were limited to just two shots on target - one of which was a missed injury-time penalty by Giorgos Giakoumakis - as the Lions battled to a 0-0 draw.

Livi were camped in their own half for large spells of the game but proved difficult to breakdown as they held firm against Ange Postecoglou’s men.

Speaking to the Courier, Martindale said: “It was a brilliant performance. The boys carried out the gameplan fantastically well.

“I think everyone seems to forget that there’s two objectives when you step on to a football park - score goals and don’t concede goals.

“Not conceding goals plays a massive part in the game and a massive part in the end result.

“I don’t think that we did enough when we had the ball, but Celtic were a team that was flying and scoring goals for fun and we had to find a way to nullify that.”

He added: “I’m delighted for the players. The boys deserve huge credit for it.

“We had to come up with a shape and system that would give us the best chance to get a result and fair play to the boys because they applied everything to the letter and they did that despite not having a huge amount of time in training given we had the game on Wednesday night.”
