Livingston boss David Martindale says Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis 'deserves credit' for reaction to penalty incident

Livingston boss David Martindale has praised Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis for trying to diffuse the situation that resulted in the Hoops being awarded a late penalty at Parkhead.

Lions defender Ayo Obileye saw red in injury-time for slapping the home side's Kyogo Furuhashi inside the penalty area. That resulted in a spot-kick for the hosts which Giakoumakis missed as the Lions held on for a 0-0 draw and extended their unbeaten run to four games.

However, Martindale said the Greek striker deserves praise for trying to drag Obileye away after the flashpoint.

Speaking to the West Lothian Courier, the Livi head coach said: "I have to say, I was really happy with Giakoumakis because he tried to take Ayo away from the situation.

“Ayo’s been pushed by Kyogo before it but there’s nothing in that - it was just sportsmanship - and Ayo’s reacted.

“Giakoumakis tried to pull him back when it would have been much easier for him to highlight it to the officials but he did the opposite.

“You have to say fair play to him for that and it was good to see. He deserves credit for that."
