Livingston boss David Martindale explains decision to sub Harrison Panayiotou just 11 minutes into striker's debut

Livingston boss David Martindale admits he made a mistake in bringing Harrison Panayiotou off the bench on Saturday - which saw the striker substituted after just 11 minutes on the park.

The former Aldershot man signed on Thursday and was introduced midway through the second-half in Livi's League Cup victory over St Mirren. But his first game for the club didn't last long as he was taken off shortly after for Andrew Shinnie.

The Livi gaffer admitted that was who he should have brought on originally and says the fact Panayiotou was 'OK' with the decision proves he has the right character for the club.

Martindale commented: "I was going to bring Andrew Shinnie on. Harrison came in on Thursday and we didn't really have a chance to check on his fitness.

"He's very aggressive, tenacious and works really hard. He's done two light training sessions. I thought I'd give it a try and put him on because I was very conscious of the fact Shinnie was coming back from injury but after 10 minutes or so I could tell I'd made a mistake. It was nothing to do with Harrison and that's one I've got to take on the chin.

"I threw him into the deep end when I should have put Shinnie on. Once he came on you could see that we started to control the ball a bit more. He's a very clever player and he's someone you don't have to coach too much. He brings that quality to the team."

He added: "It gave us an extra body in midfield and a more natural attacking midfielder dropping in to link-up play rather than a striker in Harrison trying to do that.

"I spoke to Harrison about it and he's OK with it. That shows me that he's the right type of character for Livingston and it does get him up to speed that wee bit quicker."
