Livingston boss David Martindale backs VAR decision to rule out Celtic offside goal

Livingston boss David Martindale reckons Euan Anderson was right to rule out Liel Abada's strike in the loss to Celtic.

The Celtic winger thought he had made it 3-1 and ended the contest when he rifled home with 74 minutes on the clock.

But a lengthy VAR check led to the goal being disallowed after Anderson checking the pitchside monitor for an offside.

Abada was adjudged to have been in an offside position when the ball was played through leading to the goal being chopped off even after a misjudged attempted clearance by Morgan Boyes.

The defender tried to head clear but could only touch the ball onto Abada who finished well before having the strike ruled out.

Celtic supporters inside the stadium were audibly angered by the call with Anderson taking his time when watching back the incident.

For Martindale, however, the referee made the right call and was correctly assisted by VAR.

"I thought it was offside. He made a movement and big Morgan stumbled slightly. I thought it was right," said Martindale.

"The referee reffed the game there and had the option to look at the monitor to let him make that decision.

"VAR assisted the referee to referee the game and for me he came out the right side."

The Livingston boss was also quizzed on the decision to leave star man Joel Nouble on the bench for the trip to Parkhead.

Powerful forward Nouble has been mightily impressive for the Lions this season but didn't feature in the match against Celtic because of a "slight knock".

Explaining his absence from playing a part on the pitch, Martindale said: "Joel had a slight knock.

"He could probably have played but would he have been a doubt for Saturday? Potentially.

"If he’d played the chance of not playing on Saturday would have increased."
