Livingston ASK FANS to make goalkeeper Gary Maley contract decision by voting in Twitter poll

Scottish Premiership club Livingston appear to have adopted a bold new approach to handling contract talks - by offering fans the chance to decide whether or not they offer one player a new deal.

After four years at Almondvale Stadium, experienced goalkeeper Gary Maley, 37, will see his current contract expire in June.

Maley spent the (now abandoned) 2019-20 season as Livingston's third-choice option between the sticks and is the only player in the Scottish Premiership on a part-time contract.

His future now looks to be in the hands of supporters, who were asked to vote on a potential new deal for the player on social media.

The club tweeted: "With his contract expiring next month, we’re leaving it in the hands of the fans as to whether or not we offer 'Stretch' an extension. Stay or go - you decide!"

The two options listed on the poll read: "Yes - offer a contract" and the rather brutal: "No - get him out."

Sure enough, fans quickly began to have their say.

One fan named 'keith' wrote: "Get him out!", to which Maley himself replied: "Thanks!", while some of the club's playing staff took it as an opportunity to rub salt into the wound.

Midfielder Marvin Bartley was determined to dish out a cold-blooded response to his team-mate, writing: "100% he goes, can’t push forward as a club with ‘players’ like him! Bye big man, look after yourself."

There is, of course, a risk attached to open-ended polls on Twitter, with fans of rival clubs often getting involved to change the result.

At the time of writing, a whopping 60 per cent of the 35,000 voters voted to hand the veteran stopper an extension, meaning Maley may have to delay his retirement party for another year at least.
