From playful colour to sculptural forms, the winning lights bring real character to a room. The judges responded to the fresh ideas and confident approach behind these standout designs, all of which look just as good when turned off as when turned on.
Best in class: Eos collection by Bert Frank

The inspiration is the chalices and goblets used at ancient banquets, and the designs certainly help to create a visual feast. ‘I particularly love the small but mighty table lamp – I’d place it on a shelf and let it be the hero of a dark corner, surrounded by treasured objets,’ says Livingetc's executive editor Pip Rich.

Best pendant lighting: Magnus by Original BTC

This was a standout at this year’s Euroluce in Milan, with its opal shades offering a striking contrast to the blackened bronze frame. ‘It comes in many configurations so it’s versatile, but I really like the four-drop version over a dining table,’ says Livingetc's global editor in chief Sarah Spiteri.

Waterford has a nearly 250-year legacy in using crystal, while Visual Comfort & Co has cornered the market in modern lighting design, so this is an exciting partnership. ‘I always enjoy seeing a heritage brand energised by a newer one,’ says Sarah.

Best wall light: Scallop Shell by Porta Romana

Porta Romana has recently been playing with the colours and scale of this light, first launched in 2013, and the new jewel-like glazes and smaller sizes have reinvigorated the opportunities to use it. ‘Highly decorative and like nothing else on the market, I absolutely adore it,’ says Pip.

Best lighting showpiece: Carnival collection by Curiousa
Chalky ceramics, frosted glass and smooth wood come together for this eye-catching collection of pendant lights inspired by the geometric harlequin motif. Consisting of three drop chandeliers, each looks arresting on its own, but they become an art installation when grouped over a dining table or in the corner of a living room. ‘I’ve not seen these three materials used like this together before – and I think the resulting colour palettes are so ebullient,’ says Livingetc's digital editor Hugh Metcalf.

best portable lighting: Selene collection by Heathfield & Co

The desire for portable lighting shows no sign of slowing down and this lovely collection has been created alongside garden designer Pollyanna Wilkinson. ‘It’s not just that the shapes are so cute, it’s that the finishes are so luxe,’ says Livingetc's deputy editor Ellen Finch.

Best lighting innovation: Cascade collection by Lladró x Lee Broom

Lee’s innovative design – and Lladró’s willingness to embrace it – has resulted in a collection that changes what we thought porcelain could be – so translucent it now seems to glow from within. ‘It’s pure artistry – and just as beautiful when turned off,’ says Sarah.

Best table lamp: Remi by M&S Home
The slim wiggly arms, chunky base and cone-shaped wicker shade belie the fact this lamp is only £79 – it looks like it was handmade by an artisan. But that’s the beauty of much of what M&S is currently selling – stylish, expensive-looking but affordable. ‘This would look at home in many of the high-end designer schemes and projects we get submitted,’ says Hugh.
