Living Rent Edinburgh group to protest outside property talk promoted by BBC's Martin Roberts

A group representing tenants in Edinburgh is planning to protest an event organised by a property expert aimed at would-be landlords in the city.

"Making Money from Property with Martin Roberts" is a workshop promoted by the presenter of BBC One's Homes Under the Hammer.

The Living Rent group will be staging a "Property Parasites out of Edinburgh" demonstration outside, saying sharp practises by landlords are causing misery for tenants.

Protesters will be gathering outside Cycle Republic on Morrison Street at 6pm on Thursday. The free workshop is due to take place at the Doubletree Hilton Hotel.

Eleanor White, from Living Rent, said: "Scotland’s housing market is deeply broken. While we are in the midst of a housing and homelessness crisis, we need to stop looking at housing as an opportunity for landlords to make themselves a quick profit.

"The Scottish Government urgently needs to introduce stronger regulation to protect ordinary renters from exploitation, starting with strict rent controls.

"People simply won’t forgive the government if it continues to stand by and watch as people are driven further into poverty by this kind of parasitic approach to housing."

The workshop is described as a free two-hour preview for Roberts' property investment course.

It advises people on how to buy the right property at auction and "rental and capital growth strategies."

While he will not be attending the events in person, the presenter's image is used heavily on the branding and it is designed to promote his book and course.

Roberts' Facebook page says: "For the past five years he has written and presented the hit BBC property auction show 'Homes under the Hammer', which is shown on BBC1 and Sky and is now in its 11th series.

"He is also the BBC's UK and Overseas Property expert, appearing as expert speaker on programmes such as BBC Breakfast, BBC News 24, The ONE Show and BBC Radios 2, 4 & 5 Live."

The team behind the workshop have been approached for comment.
