Livi Reds 2006 raising money with walking and cycling challenge

A boys community football club from West Lothian are raising money to fund a trip to Italy in October.

Livingston Community FC 2006 Reds team are scheduled to take part in the Verona Cup tournament so they have launched a walking and cycling challenge to fundraise.

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic their original fundraising plans, including bag packing and an annual race night, have either been cancelled or postponed indefinitely so they had to find an alternative way to fund their visit to Italy.

The ‘Cycle/Walk to Verona’ challenge will see the boys combine to walk the 1237 miles from their Eliburn Park clubhouse to the tournament venue in Verona whilst they are living in isolation.

The 15 boys will all clock up the miles whilst on their daily exercise and so far they have managed a commendable 215 miles between them.

As well as raising money, the aim of this challenge is to keep the boys both physically and mentally fit during this worrying and stressful time.

Pete Whitson, Livi Reds coach, said: “It’s such a worrying time for everyone right now. And our boys are no exception to this worry. Their football season and training has stopped, their schools are closed and they are unable to socialise with each other.

"Social isolation is difficult for adults to do, never mind when you’re an active 13/14 year old. Getting them to take part in this challenge lets them know that they are still part of their team and it will keep them mentally and physically fit during this lock down period.”
