Livi FC players will sport some marvellous moustaches for Movember

Livingston FC players and staff will be sporting some weird and wonderful moustaches throughout November to raise awareness of testicular cancer.

Livi goalkeeper Daniel Barden was diagnosed with the disease last month and the club are showing their support for their team-mate by taking part in ‘Movember’ – an annual event which involves growing moustaches during November.

The Movember Foundation aims to raise awareness of men’s health issues including mental health, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Livingston FC captain Nicky Devlin said it was important the club showed support for their team-mate and urged all men to check themselves regularly.

He said: “Obviously with the unfortunate news we received about Daniel, we felt as a team we had to do something and Movember is a great idea.

“It’s a fantastic campaign and the boys were keen to get on board with it and raise funds and awareness. It’s something I was going to do myself , but a few of the other boys then approached me and it went from there. It was easy to get everyone involved.

“There’s guys who have had facial hair for years and I’m sure there will be a few laughs and jokes at seeing everyone’s efforts, but it’s all for a really important cause.” He added: “We want to raise awareness, we want to help get that message out there that guys should be checking themselves regularly.

“That’s how Daniel caught his. He was checking and found a problem and is getting it treated. Making sure you do check is vitally important.”

The world of football has united to support Daniel, who is on loan at the Lions from English Premier League side Norwich City.

Devlin added: “He’s got a lot of support. Football clubs across the world have shown their support and that’s maybe when it hits home that there are more important issues than football.

“It was great to see. Football’s a community and when something like this happens, we all rally round each other.”
